Show Me the Money!

August 26, 2009

If you love foreign currency half as much as I do, then this post is for you!

South Africa’s currency has the Big 5 in lieu of famous people on their currency. Which is pretty great as a tourist that likely doesn’t know any famous people, save Nelson Mandela or Desmond Tutu. So I thought I would take the time, and slight financial hit, by making art out of their currency.

I made sure to save one of each bill from South Africa and a few coins. Then, I bought some frames from Goodwill once I got home. Add a few personal touches, and, voila, you have cool, world-traveler-chic artwork.

I couldn’t resist putting a crown that I had found in my scrapbooking drawer on the lion (aka King of the Jungle). Hey, artwork shouldn’t be too serious.

And, because I somehow found a matching frame at the Goodwill store, I decided to make artwork from a South African map.

I particularly like the torn edge of the map, which mostly occured because I tore it from a travel book and didn’t want to look for scissors!

Then, I hung both pieces in the guest room.

I had bought the frames with the intentions of painting them white, but when I saw how nicely they went with the bookshelves, I decided to let them stay their natural color.

I love how this room is starting to have a really personal touch instead of feeling like it could belong to anyone.

Have you ever done anything fun with foreign currency? The guest room is getting awfully close to before and after pictures, and I am mostly waiting to get that mirror up and running!
