Headboard Help

July 1, 2009

If you have talked to me in the past few days, you would know that I am trying to figure out how to get a cool headboard on a budget. I know that if I look around for a while, I could find a fairly inexpensive regular headboard. But is that a little un-creative and boring? I’ve scoured the internet and found some very cool headboard ideas

The Hanging Cushion

I particularly like this idea because most DIY headboards look pretty but aren’t so comfy to lean back on. I would probably secure the pictures to the wall because frames aren’t exactly something you want falling on you mid-sleep.

The Quilt Headboard

The quilt headboard is nice because it would serve a double purpose- display a beautiful quilt and appear to have a headboard. Again, it is a softer headboard than some DIY headboards.

The Headboard Made of Old Doors

The headboard made out of old doors is an interesting idea. It would require finding 2 old doors of the same size/style and installing some molding. This may be more expensive than the two prior options, and less comfy, but is probably more sturdy and is capable of being connected to the bed instead of the wall behind the bed.

Reclaimed Wood “Headboard”

I like this idea because it is more of a permanent structure than the typical headboard. It could also be modified to be a particular height and attached to the bed (by attaching the reclaimed wood onto a perpendicular 2×4). I think this could add some masculinity to my otherwise feminine guest bedroom.

So what do you think? I am completely torn. Which is your favorite? Have you tried anything creative with headboards that turned out well? I am wondering if I should try something like this or hold out for a really cool pre-made headboard.

The quilt (or any other blankety thing) one is neat, simply because of the creativity there, but the old door one looks kind of just like any old headboard – at least that example does.

Of the four you pictured, I like the big cushion one the best from the practicality standpoint: inexpensive, attractive, solves the problem about adding pillows to the bed when you want to sit up and read. However, I love the look of the reclaimed wood one. Actually, I would like to do a whole wall of my house like this, but I’m nt sure how you get the wood. Has it been de-bugged? I don’t want to lay there awake and worry about the possibility of critters. That whole bedroom scene is cool. The colors are great. I might look into it, so let me know if you find any old wood leads.

Hmm…I think it could look neat to combine the cushion or quilt one with the reclaimed wood. Maybe?

Should you hold out for a really cool one? What could be cooler than something you would come up with? I mean, really. You are so clever and have great taste! Also, an inexpensive DIY one would mean you could change it a few years down the road without losing a big investment.

Now you’ve got my creative juices flowing, so I’ll let you know if I think of anything interesting.

I know! I really like the reclaimed wood wall. It kinda looks like there is a fireplace or something there. I know that they sell reclaimed wood and there is a fairly big market for it, so I would imagine it is debugged! I am definitely with you on that!

Im leaning towards the cushion as well. I saw one at the store today and it was super plush and soft, which would be nice. If I try any of these, I will post pictures!

…Maybe we can just go steal some “reclaimed” wood from an abandoned old house around here!

Liam’s mom lived on a place with some old falling down barns and they probably would have been happy for us to get it off the property. Maybe they’d evne pay us to take it! 😉

I like the cushion one the best. Very cool! In my guest room I have a wrought iron scroll thing hanging on the wall above the bed where the headboard would be. I got it at Hobby Lobby for less than $20. I’ll see if I can find a picture of a similar one online and post the link.
